Our Commitment
Kin Records is committed to making our platform accessible to all users, including persons with disabilities. We believe that every family member should be able to access and contribute to their family's record, regardless of ability. We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.
Accessibility Features
Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements can be accessed and operated using a keyboard alone. We provide visible focus indicators so you always know where you are on the page.
Screen reader support: We use semantic HTML, ARIA labels, and landmarks to ensure screen readers can accurately convey the content and structure of each page.
Skip navigation: A "Skip to main content" link is available at the top of every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repetitive navigation.
Colour contrast: We maintain sufficient colour contrast ratios throughout the interface to ensure readability for users with low vision or colour vision deficiencies.
Resizable text: The interface supports browser text scaling. You can increase text size using your browser's zoom function without loss of content or functionality.
Reduced motion: We respect the "prefers-reduced-motion" system setting. If you have reduced motion enabled in your operating system, animations will be minimised.
Form labels: All form fields have associated labels so that screen readers and assistive technologies can identify them correctly.
Accessibility Toolbar
Kin Records includes a built-in accessibility toolbar (the blue icon in the bottom-right corner of every page) that provides the following features:
Vision: High contrast mode, highlighted links, and larger cursor for users with visual impairments.
Text size: Adjustable text size from 100% to 175% for comfortable reading.
Reading and dyslexia: OpenDyslexic font, increased letter and word spacing, and a reading guide line for users with dyslexia or reading difficulties.
Hearing: Visual audio indicators for users who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Motion: Reduced animations for users sensitive to motion.
All preferences are saved automatically and persist between visits.
Known Limitations
The interactive family tree visualisation uses a canvas-based layout that may not be fully accessible to screen readers. We provide an alternative list-based view of family relationships that is fully accessible. We are actively working to improve the accessibility of the tree view.
Feedback
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of Kin Records. If you encounter any barriers or have suggestions for improvement, please contact us at [email protected]. We take accessibility feedback seriously and will respond within 5 business days.
